Fosfomycin resistance in Escherichia coli in Japan.

Fosfomycin, [L-(cis)-1, 2-epoxypropyl phosphonic acid] (FOM), a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by some strains of Streptomyces species1), acts as a phosphoenolpyruvate analog and irreversibly inhibits phosphoenolpyruvate UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDPG1cNAc)-3-O-enolpyruvyl transferase, an enzyme which catalyzes the first step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis2). FOM enters susceptible bacteria b...

Fosfomycin Resistance in Escherichia coli, Pennsylvania, USA

Fosfomycin resistance in Escherichia coli is rare in the United States. An extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli clinical strain identified in Pennsylvania, USA, showed high-level fosfomycin resistance caused by the fosA3 gene. The IncFII plasmid carrying this gene had a structure similar to those found in China, where fosfomycin resistance is commonly described.

papA gene of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli.

P fimbrial adhesins may be associated with the virulence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). However, most APECs are unable to express P fimbriae even when they are grown under conditions that favor P fimbrial expression. This failure can be explained by the complete absence of the pap operon or the presence of an incomplete pap operon in Pap-negative APEC strains. In the present study...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Molecular Mechanisms of Fosfomycin Resistance in Clinical Escherichia coli Isolates in Mainland China

Escherichia coli is one of the most common pathogens in nosocomial and community-acquired infections in humans. Fosfomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis responsible for bacterial cell wall formation. Although low, the exact E. coli susceptibility to fosfomycin as well as the mechanisms of resistance in the population from Mainland China are mostly unknown...

Large plasmids of avian Escherichia coli isolates.

The plasmid DNA of 30 Escherichia coli isolates from chickens was extracted and examined using techniques designed to isolate large plasmids. This plasmid DNA was examined for the presence of certain known virulence-related genes including cvaC, traT, and some aerobactin-related sequences. Seventeen of the 30 isolates contained from one to four plasmids greater than 50 kb in size. Eleven of the...
